Moccamaster

KGBV Select Coffee Maker

Drip coffee machines have changed a lot in the past 10 years. A new generation of wildly excellent, sophisticated drip coffee machines have sprung up to brew unbridled excellence. The one constant in all of this has been Technivorm-Moccamaster, whose coffee machines are on sale during Prime Day for the lowest price I’ve seen.

Handmade in the Netherlands for nearly 60 years, Moccamaster coffee machines are both resolutely analog and resolutely precise, brewing within 2 degrees of target temperature in order to make uniformly excellent cups of coffee. This KBGV in particular is excellent, because it’s able to optimize its flow rate for either full or half batches.

The Moccamaster is the sort of machine that engineers call “sexy,” but each of its part is also repairable or replaceable. The warranty is five years, but their North American shop just outside of Portland, Oregon, will repair your machine—if it ever needs it—for about $60. Whenever anyone asks me for a truly high-end drip coffee maker that could last decades, Moccamaster is the machine I recommend.

Chances are if you buy a Moccamaster today, it’ll still be around through multiple presidential administrations. It’ll be there for you when you move across the country, your marriage ends, your truck gets stolen, and your parakeet flies the coop. Most good things end. But judging by the testimonials from seemingly half of Scandinavia, Moccamasters don’t always.
