Mark Zuckerberg building ‘artificial general intelligence team’

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta, is reportedly putting together a new team focused on the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

AGI is a theoretical system that can match or even surpass the capabilities of a human being.

According to Bloomberg, Zuckerberg is personally recruiting about 50 experts, including a new head of AI research, to lead the “superintelligence” team.

The publication reported Tuesday that the initiative is backed by a $10 billion investment in Scale AI, a company specialising in AI training data.

According to the report, founder of Scale AI Alexandr Wang is expected to join the AGI group once a deal is finalised.

The move is partly driven by frustration over Meta’s latest model, Llama 4, which did not meet expectations, Bloomberg News reported.

Meta recently delayed the release of its flagship AI model, “Behemoth”, due to concerns about its capabilities. The model was initially due for release in April or June but has been delayed to September this year or later.

In May, the Wall Street Journal reported that the company’s engineers were struggling to improve the model’s capabilities, questioning whether it was ready for launch.

Earlier this month, Meta Platforms struck a 20-year agreement to purchase nuclear power from Constellation Energy, marking the social media giant’s first major foray into nuclear energy as it seeks to power its growing AI operations.
