Fans eagerly anticipating the second installement of the new Mortal Kombat movie franchise will have to wait a little longer. As reported by Deadline, the sequel starring Karl Urban and directed by Mortal Kombat fillmaker Simon McQuoid has officially been delayed until next summer.

Mortal Kombat II will now debut in theaters May 15, 2026 instead of October 24, 2025. Deadline claims Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema believe the movie will perform better at the summer box office given the wild fan response to the trailer.

New Line Cinema descrribes the sequel as “the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself (Karl Urban)—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”

Urban will star in Mortal Kombat II along with Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, and more.

Back in July, IGN teamed with Warner Bros. and IMAX to exclusively debut the first trailer of Mortal Kombat II. We also spoke to Karl Urban about playing Johnny Cage and how the character has “no self confidence” at the beginning of the new movie. Plus check out our breakdown of who’s who in Mortal Kombat II.
