Sony has revealed My First Gran Turismo, a free to play introduction to the racing simulator series coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on December 6.

A PlayStation Blog post from Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi called the game “a special free-to-play invitation to dive into the exhilarating world of motorsports,” where players can learn the basics of controls and mechanics alongside the history of the cars featured.

“Whether it’s introducing kids to the joy of racing for the first time or reigniting a forgotten passion for driving, My First Gran Turismo was designed to be both approachable and immersive, created for everyone, with no limits on age or driving skill level,” Yamauchi said.

Players are taken through the essentials of virtual driving bit by bit, mastering the likes of cornering, braking, and acceleration, and can then deploy those skills in time trials, races, and other challenges. A total of 18 cars are available in the game.

The PS5 version of My First Gran Turismo also includes PlayStation VR2 support, “allowing you to experience a whole new level of driving realism and highly immersive gameplay.”

PlayStation likely hopes those who jump into this free to play experience will later purchase a full price Gran Turismo, such as the latest release Gran Turismo 7. This is also available on both PS4 and PS5 and seemingly serves as the foundation of this free to play experience.

In our 9/10 review of that game, IGN said: “Mixing the original GT’s trendsetting format with GT Sport’s stern but very successful focus on competitive online racing, Gran Turismo 7 makes a few errors but is a potent podium performance from developer Polyphony Digital.”
