Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in True Detective Season 5 for HBO.

Information about who’s in the running to lead the next chapter of the crime anthology show comes from Variety. If the National Treasure, Longlegs, and Pig star is eventually confirmed to appear, he will only be the latest to join True Detective’s long list of other big-name stars.

True Detective Season 5 got the greenlight from HBO in March 2024, with Season 4: Night Country showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer Issa López also confirming her attachment at that time. Her involvement is part of a new, multiyear overall deal that will see her creating exclusive content for HBO Max, beginning with Season 5.

True Detective: Night Country took audiences to the blood-soaked streets of a small Alaskan town in 2024, with Jode Foster and Kali Reis picked to lead viewers through its icy mysteries. Should Cage join, he’ll take part in a new, likely warmer story set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. Additional details about True Detective: Season 5 remain under wraps.

True Detective started strong with Season 1 in 2014 and starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. We gave its finale episodes alone a perfect 10/10 in our review upon its release. Season 2 then followed with Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, and Vince Vaughn in 2015, with Season 3 finally arriving in 2019 with Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo.

It’s unclear when True Detective Season 5 will arrive or even if Cage will be its star. In the meantime, you can read up on how a review bombing campaign led López to ask fans to leave their own positive reviews. You can also learn more about Cage’s next television project: a live-action Spider-Noir spinoff show for Amazon’s Prime Video.
