Now Xbox Is Down for Some

If you’re having trouble with logging into Xbox, you’re not alone: it’s suffering a major outage that’s affecting account and profile sign-in, viewing games on the store, and playing games.

In a post on social media, Microsoft acknowledged the issue, which began earlier today, July 27, and said its teams were working on it.

“Just checking in on the game library, sign-in, and game launch issue,” reads a tweet issued just before 1pm UK time. “We know this has been going on a while and appreciate your patience while our teams keep working on it.”

Microsoft will want to sort this outage out sooner rather than later, with Halo: Campaign Evolved set to launch proper on July 28 after three days of early access for Premium Edition owners.

The Xbox outage comes less than a week after Sony’s PlayStation Network went down in similar fashion. The timing couldn’t have been worse for Sony, which is operating amid a backlash to its decision to kill physical discs for new PlayStation games in 2028. Critics said not being able to play some owned games because of online services going down was yet another reason why an all-digital future is unwelcome. Indeed, gamers are planning a week-long boycott of PlayStation next month in protest.

While Microsoft has yet to make any announcement about video game disc production for Xbox, it is reportedly set to release the next-gen Xbox without a disc drive, suggesting a similar long-term plan for its gaming business. “You may have problems playing disc-based games right now,” Microsoft’s Xbox support website reads.

Microsoft’s Xbox support page currently lists a resolution for the current issues as “pending.” Hopefully they will be resolved soon. We’ll keep an eye out an update this story with any further developments.
