Nvidia Reportedly Discontinues RTX 5090, According to Leaker

Nvidia Reportedly Discontinues RTX 5090, According to Leaker

While the RTX 5090 was already hard enough to get at a reasonable price, new leaks suggest that Nvidia is flat-out discontinuing its flagship graphics card.

GPU leaker zed__wang on X/Twitter posted about the RTX 5090, saying there would be “no more GB202 for 5090, confirmed.” They then followed up with a quote tweet, saying, “All future GB202 supplies are RTX Pro exclusive.”

For the uninitiated, GB202 is the name of the actual GPU die that powers the RTX 5090, and it has always powered more than just the RTX 5090. Instead, the GB202 powers nine distinct workstation and data center GPUs, according to TechPowerUp. It shouldn’t be too surprising, then, that Nvidia would opt to prioritize much more expensive graphics cards like the Nvidia RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell, which costs around $18,000, rather than the RTX 5090, which costs around $9,000 on Newegg these days.

Nvidia also hasn’t been shy about prioritizing AI over the gaming division, with the company dropping gaming from its earnings report, and working it into the ‘Edge Computing’ category.

While the leak suggests that the discontinuation of the RTX 5090 is confirmed, it is anything but. Nvidia hasn’t commented on its flagship card going away. That doesn’t mean much on the surface, but if you look back to February, similar rumors were spinning up about the RTX 5070 Ti, and no matter how convincing those leaks were, they ended up being completely false.

I’ve asked Nvidia for comment and will update this article if I hear back, but I suspect that this RTX 5090 situation is very similar. Back then, production on the RTX 5070 Ti stalled as VRAM was being prioritized for data centers, but the RTX 5070 Ti itself didn’t get discontinued. It’s probably going to be a similar story for the RTX 5090, with new units slowing to a trickle as prices continue to rise.

Either way, for most people, the RTX 5090 has been effectively discontinued for months, if not this entire year. It seems like a distant memory at this point, but the RTX 5090 launched in January 2025 for $1,999, but that price has skyrocketed since. Now that graphics card’s price is inching closer to the $10,000 mark, and while there are definitely people who can afford to invest that kind of money into their computer, for most DIY PC gamers, the RTX 5090 might as well not even exist.

If the RTX 5090 was discontinued, it would mostly impact prebuilt gaming PCs. After all, prebuilts strapped with that graphics haven’t seen the same astronomical jump in price quite yet, and you can get a decent Alienware tower with a 5090 for less than it costs to just buy the GPU on Newegg right now. But, if Nvidia were to stop manufacturing the RTX 5090, that would likely stop immediately.

It’s not clear what’s going to happen with the RTX 5090, but regardless, it’s hard to imagine any world where the high-end GPU doesn’t continue to go up in price as RAMageddon continues. And now that it’s rumored that Nvidia won’t launch its next-generation graphics cards until 2028, it could be a long time before any high-end GPU is a reasonable price — if it ever even happens again.
