Nvidia is investing $500 billion in the development of American-made AI supercomputers.

The chip manufacturer said it is working with manufacturing partners to design and launch factories that will build Nvidia AI supercomputers entirely in the United States.

As part of the plans, the tech giant is commissioning more than one million square feet of manufacturing space to build and test its AI supercomputers and chips.

“The engines of the world’s AI infrastructure are being built in the United States for the first time,” said Jensen Huang, founder and chief executive of Nvidia. “Adding American manufacturing helps us better meet the incredible and growing demand for AI chips and supercomputers, strengthens our supply chain and boosts our resiliency.”

The company said it has formed partnerships with several manufacturing companies, including TSMC, Foxconn, Wistron, Amkor and SPIL. It has already started production of its Blackwell chips at TSMC’s facilities in Phoenix, Arizona, while it is collaborating with Foxconn in Houston and Winston in Dallas to build supercomputer production facilities, with mass production in both facilities expected to increase over the next 12-15 months.

The chip manufacturer added that it is collaborating with semiconductor manufacturing companies Amkor and SPIL for packaging and testing operations in Arizona.

“The AI chip and supercomputer supply chain is complex and requires the most advanced production, packaging, assembly and testing technologies,” it said in a statement.

In March, TSMC announced plans to invest an additional $100 billion in AI in the US, bringing its total investments in the country to to $165 billion.

TMSC said it is increasing its investment in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, with the construction of three new factories, two advanced packaging plants, and a research and development centre.

“These world-leading companies are deepening their partnership with Nvidia, growing their businesses while expanding their global footprint and hardening supply chain resilience,” Nvidia said.

Nvidia AI supercomputers are advanced computing systems designed specifically for processing artificial intelligence tasks. These supercomputers are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern AI data centres, often referred to as ‘AI factories’.

Nvidia’s supercomputers are designed to handle complex AI calculations, such as deep learning, machine learning and data analysis, leveraging the company’s powerful GPUs (graphics processing units) to accelerate these processes.

Manufacturing Nvidia AI chips and supercomputers for American AI factories is expected to create hundreds of thousands of jobs and drive trillions of dollars in economic security over the coming decades, the company said.

The business plans to use its advanced AI, robotics and digital twin technologies to design and operate the facilities, such as 3D applications and simulations platform Nvidia Omniverse, and robot technology NVIDIA Isaac GR00T.

In March, Nvidia announced plans to build a research centre in Boston focused on advancing quantum computing technologies through collaboration with leading hardware and software makers.

The Nvidia Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC) will integrate quantum hardware with AI supercomputers to enable what the company calls “accelerated quantum supercomputing,” according to a company announcement at its annual GTC conference.
