PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program Shutdown Announced After 3 Years

Sony has announced an end to its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, less than three years after its launch.

The reward program no longer accepts new members as of today, and anyone leaving their membership now will be unable to rejoin, with reward points permanently deleted upon cancellation.

Otherwise, existing members will continue to be able to earn points until July 23, 2025, and redeem any remaining balance until November 3, 2026.

PlayStation Stars’ Digital Collectibles will remain accessible for the forseeable future despite the end of the program, Sony has said, meaning you can continue to look at your 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead for a good while longer.

“Since launching the program, we’ve learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends,” PlayStation vice president of network advertisiting, loyalty and licensed merchandise Grace Chen said in a statement on the PlayStation blog.

“Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings.”

No replacement for the program was mentioned, and it’s not clear what Sony’s findings from running PlayStation Stars might be.

PlayStation 5 30th Anniversary Collection

PlayStation Stars launched in July 2022, as a way to reward PS5 owners with points with real cash value based on money spent in the PlayStation Store, as well as for completing various tasks like completing a survey, or trying out various games or system features.

The offering was a rival to Microsoft’s Xbox Rewards — and over time, both programs have been changed to become less profitable.

PlayStation Stars was unavailable for a month last summer while its services were unavailable. Then, in October, Sony announced a number of changes to PlayStation Stars including the expiration of points after 12 months rather than 24 months, and the removal of PlayStation Plus membership as a points-eligible purchase. Now, the whole thing is disappearing altogether.
