Buffy the Vampire Slayer legend Sarah Michelle Gellar has been praised by a new co-star for turning up on set every day to act as an advisor for the series’ lore. And yes, that includes describing exactly how people should look when they’re bitten by a vampire.
Speaking to Deadline, I Know What You Did Last Summer actress Chase Sui Wonders said Gellar was an “incredible woman” and now an “onset consultant” for the Buffy reboot, in addition to starring in its pilot episode and serving as an executive producer on the overall project.
Wonders, who met Gellar on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, will also appear in the Buffy reboot’s pilot — which officially began filming last week. Should Hulu commission a full series, production is expected to continue in 2026, for a potential debut later next year.
“It’s the dream to bring back a show like this, to have someone who was there day in and day out and through the origin of the series, be the consultant,” Wonders said of Gellar’s involvement. “She’s the onset consultant for all kinds of things of like, how do you react to these types of vampires, or how does someone react to a bite, and all the lore she’s got stored in her brain. So, it’s very helpful.”
Wonders will play a new character named Justine, who will appear in a guest role. Does this mean she has had first-hand knowledge of getting bitten, precluding her from joining the reboot’s already-announced main cast of characters? Time will tell.
“What I can say is that it’s a very fun way to enter this series,” Wonders said of her character, “and [Gellar] is on set every day, from as soon as we start to when we wrap. She’s very hands on.”
Last week, Gellar posted a behind the scenes video offering a first look at herself training for the series alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong, the new lead of the reboot series, whose character is reportedly named Nova.
Also set to star in the reboot are Faly Rakatohavana as Hugo, Severance’s Sarah Bock as Gracie, and Law & Order: SVU’s Ava Jean as Larkin. CSI: Vegas’ Daniel Di Tomasso will play Nova’s single father, while Frasier’s Jack Cutmore-Scott will portray the school teacher Mr. Burke.
Fans recently got their first glimpse at Sarah Michelle Gellar in costume as Buffy for the first time in 20 years — sporting a very different look from her high school days.
