In Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, you’ll quickly start finding new crafting recipes throughout the Land of Shadow. One type of recipe you’ll run into a lot is for “Hefty Pots.” These huge variants of the throwing pots from the base game can deal a ton of damage and build up status effects faster than their smaller counterparts, but take a bit longer to throw due to their sheer size.

Crafting the new Hefty Pots in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will require a bit of scavenging, tracking down new resources specific to the Land of Shadow to pack into Hefty Cracked Pots and hurl at your foes. One ingredient you’ll need, especially if you want to inflict frostbite, is the Frozen Maggot. Here’s how to track down tons of Frozen Maggots easily.

Where to Find Frozen Maggots

The easiest place to farm Frozen Maggots early is the Belurat Gaol. This underground prison, accessible via a lakeside cave near Belurat, is filled with spirits, Jar Innards, and some Living Jars. Most importantly, for our purposes, there are Frozen Maggots scattered throughout the Gaol that can be gathered en-mass. Many of these respawn and the shadowy spirits wandering this Gaol can drop more of them when defeated. (They are the source of sustenance for those imprisoned here, after all.)

You can find Belurat Gaol at the location shown in the first image, with plenty of maggots accessible only a short walk from the Grace. From the Grace, head deeper into the Gaol and turn left into the first available cell to find some Frozen Maggots on the ground. Head out of the cell and keep heading further down until you drop into a large open area. There are more Maggots on the ground here, along with the Shadowy Spirits that drop them. From here, keep heading down, across a natural bridge and through a door, to find another room with a Maggot to collect. You can then hop through a hole on the right side of the room to go deeper into the Gaol and find even more Maggots, but there isn’t a way back to the entrance without dying or killing a boss after this point, so it’s better to head back and reset at the grace after reaching this room if your only goal is to farm Maggots. (Clear the whole Gaol when you get the chance, though, since it’s full of useful Items)

The video footage included at the start of this guide shows the locations of all Frozen Maggots up until the hole and a few of the ones that can be found after jumping through the hole.

How to Use Frozen Maggots

Frozen Maggots are the main ingredient in the Hefty Freezing Pot, which can cause a huge amount of frostbite build-up when thrown at an enemy. The recipe for the Hefty Freezing Pot is found in the “Greater Potentate’s Cookbook (11)”, which can be found in the Jar Labyrinth, further inside the Belurat Gaol. After the stairs to the huge Jar Altar collapse and drop you into the Labyrinth, you’ll need to search the labyrinth for pots you can use to climb up and reach the cookbook, which is sitting atop four jars near the middle of the labyrinth.
