Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane has discussed the reveal of a key Marvel comics character in the series’ most recent episode, as well as recent set photos that revealed the return of other fan favorites.
Warning! Spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again follow…
If you’re up to date on Born Again, you’ll have seen long-awaited return of Jessica Jones in the show’s latest episode — something that had long been teased. But viewers also got to meet someone else, too: Danielle, Jessica Jones’ daughter.
While TV viewers may be surprised to see that Jones is now a mother, the character of Danielle is one that comes directly from the comics — and someone who, in one version of the future, ultimately grows up to become Captain America. In this reality, Danielle Cage has inherited the powers of both her superhero parents: Jessica Jones’ super strength and Luke Cage’s bulletproof skin. Her name, meanwhile, is a nod to Danny Rand, AKA Iron Fist, a friend of the family.
For now, however, Danielle is just a toddler in Born Again and her father remains technically unconfirmed — though there’s clearly more to come here through the rest of this season and into the next. Indeed, talking to Nexus Point News, Scardapane suggested that Danielle’s introduction was part of a growing street level MCU world — one that looks set to expand further over the next few years.
“In the story that we’re presently talking about, Danielle’s father, it’s pretty obvious who that is,” Scardapane said. “And that connection has echoes through the corner of the world that we’re playing in. I worked on those Netflix shows, all of our stages were next to each other, all of the shows, writers’ rooms were in the same building. There was a lot of cross-pollination between the staffs and the casts, and we all felt part of one big world.
“So, without giving too much away – a lot has already been speculated on – having Jessica’s extended family and having Luke’s world expand as we move forward has been part of the plan since day one.”
While Scardapane remained coy on the chances of Elektra and Colleen Wing — two other street level Marvel characters from Netflix era — getting a return, his response when asked about the recent set photos showing Mike Colter (who plays Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (who plays Danny Rand) filming for Season 3 left little room for doubt.
“Those guys, they just came by to say hi, right?” Scaradapane joked. “Yeah, I can’t talk about any of that. Season 3, I think people will enjoy very much and you will see some familiar faces.”
For now, we know that Daredevil: Born Again’s second season will show the climax of the series’ Mayor Fisk arc, with next year’s episodes showing something of the aftermath.
