Sicario 3 is real and gearing up to enter production shortly, according to Josh Brolin.
When speaking with Screen Rant, Brolin was asked about the long-awaited threequel and said that it “is happening” and that production will ramp up “soon.” Not much else was revealed about the project, but if all of that is true, don’t expect Denis Villeneuve in the director’s chair. He’s currently wrapping up Dune: Part 3 and will then immediately shift over to his James Bond film, which is currently going through the casting process to find its 007 as we speak.
Villeneuve directed the first Sicario, which helped spark initial rise as a prolific director. However, he didn’t return for the sequel as he was slammed with projects like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. The film was instead handed off to Stefano Sollima, who created a competent action thriller, though one that arguably lacked the nuance and unnerving direction that made the first film so special. Still, it did well enough that audiences were open to a third film.
For years, Brolin has teased the possibility of a third Sicario, but this appears to be the closest we’ve come to it actually happening. It’s unclear if Benicio del Toro will co-star once again, who will direct, or who will write it. Back in 2023, it was revealed that Taylor Sheridan (who penned the first two films) and longtime Mission: Impossible writer/director Christopher McQuarrie were collaborating on it, but it’s unclear if they were writing a story, producing, or consulting in some capacity.
McQuarrie cut his teeth as a script doctor before his directing career became more active in the 2010s. He has experience performing uncredited rewrites on promising scripts that needed to be punched up, so he may be lending those skills to Sicario 3. Sheridan is pretty busy writing an onslaught of shows for Paramount, meanwhile, but a return for Sicario 3 does not seem out of the question.
