Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set Videos Tease Return to Practical Web-Swinging After Relying on CGI for Past MCU Movies

Spider-Man: Brand New Day filming is underway, and fans are happy to see it will finally include some form of practical web-swinging.

Videos of a return for Tom Holland’s wall-crawler swung their way onto the internet over the weekend, showing a sneak peek at several potential action scenes coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie ahead of its premiere next year. While these behind-the-scenes videos from the shoot in Glasgow, Scotland, have mostly focused on Spider-Man riding tanks and greeting fans, the latest footage teases a more realistic take on one of Spidey’s favorite forms of travel.

While Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home, and other previous Spider-Man MCU outings usually relied on CGI when it came to web-swinging (if there was ever any swinging at all), Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks like it will feature practical web travel on more than one occasion. Highlights from the clips crawling all over social media include Peter Parker swinging above that aforementioned tank both, presumably, to chase the vehicle while also dodging some nearby explosions.

Practical web-swinging in Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks like a far cry from the computer-generated effects seen previously, but more importantly, it’s a sign that Marvel Studios finally wants to give fans something they’ve been begging for. Jon Watts, the director of Spider-Man’s three main MCU movies, was blunt when it came to his feelings about practical web-swinging in comments offered last year: “It doesn’t look good when someone is just swinging on a rope.”

“You think you’re gonna go in there, you’re like, ‘We’re gonna do it all practical. We’re gonna get a stuntman. We’re gonna be swinging around,’” Watts told Collider. “It’s boring. It looks dumb. It looks like a monkey swinging on a vine when you put someone on just a rope. Don’t waste your time. That’s my advice to the next Spider-Man director.”

Fans were quick to point to positive examples of practical web-swinging execution at the time, including Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man movies in the conversation. Now that it seems Spider-Man: Brand New Day will implement at least some level of practical web-swinging, fans can’t help but share their excitement for what’s to come.

It was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton who eventually landed the Spider-Man: Brand New Day director spot. Time will tell if his crack at practical web-swinging will pan out, but it’s clear it’s a move that has kicked up quite the conversation among MCU movie fans.

In other Spider-Man: Brand New Day news, we recently learned that, alongside Jon Bernthal as The Punisher and Holland, the July 31, 2026, MCU movie will see the return of Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk and Michael Mando as Mac Gargan (aka Scorpion). Marvel Studios also took the time to release a set of suit teasers, revealing both an up-close (and brief) look at Spidey’s new threads and a clip of Holland wearing the suit.
