Spider-Man Star Tom Holland Says Brand New Day Feels Like a ‘Rebirth’ and ‘The First Movie in the Next Chapter,’ Though He’s Planning Acting Break in 2027

Tom Holland has described the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the “first movie in the next chapter” of his web-slinging film series — though he isn’t planning to simply churn out another trilogy over the next couple of years.

Speaking to Complex Pop, Holland discussed his plans for a fresh break from acting in 2027 — the year Avengers: Secret Wars releases, following 2026’s Marvel double bill of both Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. Holland isn’t yet formally announced to appear in either Avengers movie, though fans widely expect him to appear.

“I’d just like to spend time with my friends and family,” Holland said of his plans for 2027. “I love taking these kind of little beaks for me to travel or to work on life stuff and sort my accounts out. I want to make sure I can just be a well-rounded human being rather than just being a work machine that’s just constantly on set.”

Discussing Brand New Day in more detail, Holland said the film “really feels like we aren’t making the fourth movie. We’re making the first movie in the chapter… This is a rebirth. This is something completely new.”

Brand New Day will pick up the story of Holland’s Peter Parker several years after fans last saw him, during the heartbreaking end to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Separated from his beloved MJ and best pal Ned, still mourning the death of Aunt May, Parker continues fighting the good fight on New York’s streets.

While Zendaya and Jacob Batalon’s MJ and Ned will return in some capacity, the suggestion has been that these will be minor roles in what is otherwise a fresh start for the character. Stranger Things star Sadie Sink will co-star alongside Holland in a top-secret role that may fans are assuming will be a fresh love interest for Peter. And, of course, there will be several crossover appearances from other MCU favorites, such as Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/Punisher.

Peter Parker’s multiversal days may be behind him (for now) but elements of his time with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men will be visible in Brand New Day, Holland said. Indeed, elements of his new costume in the next film were deliberately inspired by the designs of his fellow web-slingers — a detail hinted at in the closing credits of No Way Home.

“I’m really glad that people are picking up on the homage to Tobey and Andrew’s suit,” Holland said. “The third movie was very much about paying respects to those guys… I really like the idea that he’s trying to be his big brothers, that he looks up to them and sees little details on their suits that he thinks are really cool.”

The above interview was conducted prior to Holland’s recent hospitalization with a head injury sustained on the Brand New Day set. As reported this morning, Holland is expected to miss several days filming to rest, with talks on how to work around the star’s absence ongoing.
