Spider-Verse Filmmakers Lord and Miller Are Making an Archie Comics Movie

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the famous filmmaking pair known for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and the Spider-Verse films, are about to tackle a new, unexpected project. They’re making a film based on Archie comics.

As reported by Variety, Lord and Miller are producing a new live-action movie based on the comics, though as of yet there are no specific details about what story it will tell. We do know that Tom King, author of comics such as Marvel’s The Vision, DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and various Batman and other DC projects, will write the screenplay. Emma Watts and Jon Goldwater will also produce, which will be done through Universal.

“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations,” the duo said in a statement. “When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.”

Archie Comics have been running since the 1940s, with a reboot beginning in 2015 that ran through 2020. It’s become a cultural staple, sparking iconic characters such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Jughead, and 2017 teen drama series Riverdale. At its center, a love triangle between Betty, Veronica, and Archie has been a constant question and problem throughout the entire run of comics, finally culminating in a 2024 one-shot written by the same Tom King, in which Archie made a choice.
