Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Cancelled

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will end with its upcoming second season, which recently wrapped filming.

According to Variety, the Paramount+ series’ first season never cracked the Top 10 of Nielsen’s streaming viewership charts.

“We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to life,” CBS Studios and Paramount+ announced Monday.

“The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the ‘Star Trek’ universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”

Starfleet Academy co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau said in a letter: “We’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished together on this show, and the world will get to see the work of these extraordinary artists when season two airs. We will finish strong.”

You can read their full letter at the Variety article linked to above.

While critics were mostly positive about the show, Starfleet Academy proved divisive among segments of fandom who objected to the show’s progressiveness and Gen Z-skewing nature, while other fans embraced the show for those very qualities.

In his Starfleet Academy: Season 1 finale review, IGN’s Scott Collura acknowledged that the future of Star Trek, and Starfleet Academy in particular, seemed murky:

“I’m glad that Alex Kurtzman and his team have used this show as a venue to try new and different things with Star Trek, even if they haven’t always worked. With the future of the franchise more uncertain now than it has been in the past decade, it’s good to know that we have at least one more season of Starfleet Academy to look forward to where hopefully new frontiers will continue to be pushed.”

There is no premiere date yet for Starfleet Academy: Season 2. Co-showrunner Noga Landau recently told IGN that ““we go so much deeper and there are so many new and unexpected things that happen” in Starfleet Academy: Season 2.

“The dynamics that you thought were going to be one way forever start to slowly shift. … And the paths in Starfleet that you thought you knew you wanted begin to shift because of the experiences that you have.”

Starfleet Academy isn’t the only Trek series coming to an end soon. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with its fifth season.
