Tom Cruise has issued a statement following Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s record-breaking box office launch, declaring the weekend just gone as “one for the history books!”

The Final Reckoning made an impressive $200 million at the global box office across the four-day Memorial Day weekend record. This, coupled with Lilo & Stitch’s huge $341 million box office haul, helped set a four-day Memorial Day weekend record.

The Final Reckoning has enjoyed the biggest launch of any of the eight Mission: Impossible films released so far, with $63 million at the domestic box office over the 3-day weekend. That’s ahead of Mission: Impossible – Fallout’s $61 million haul. The Final Reckoning is on $77.5 million for four days domestically with an international weekend estimate of $127 million for a worldwide weekend estimate of $190 million.

Posting on social media, Cruise congratulated the teams that put Mission: Impossible together and thanked fans for turning up for the film.

This weekend was one for the history books!

Congratulations and thank you to every filmmaker, every artist, every crew member and every single person who works at the studios.

To every theater and every employee who helps bring these stories to audiences, thank you.

To every one that works at Paramount Pictures and Skydance, thank you for your many years of partnership and unwavering support.

And most of all, THANK YOU to audiences everywhere — for whom we all serve and for whom we all LOVE to entertain.

Sincerely, Tom.

IGN’s Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning review returned a 6/10. We said: “The action thrills, but the soapy tone keeps greatness just out of reach for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”

Is this really the end of the road for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt? Cruise has remained coy on the possibility of returning for a ninth Mission: Impossible movie.
