Ewan McGregor has revealed how he had thought his Obi-Wan Kenobi show was going to be the “big splash” for Star Wars on streamer Disney+, but it turned out to be The Mandalorian.

Disney+ launched in November 2019 alongside The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal in the title role. It fueled the streamer’s early success and went on to become one of the most successful Star Wars shows ever. According to McGregor, The Mandalorian stole Obi-Wan Kenobi’s thunder somewhat.

“They brought out Disney+ and they wanted a big splash, and I thought that’s what we were going to be and then just before we made it, The Mandalorian came out,” McGregor said at Fan Expo Chicago 2025, as reported by PopVerse.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, which saw McGregor reprise his iconic role from the Star Wars prequel movies, wouldn’t release until May 2022, by which time The Mandalorian was in full swing.

“I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I thought we were supposed to be the big splash.’ I thought, ‘Wait a minute, what’s this, what’s this going on here?’” McGregor continued. “But there would seem to be plenty of room for all of us.”

Since Obi-Wan Kenobi wrapped up, McGregor has repeatedly called on Disney to greenlight a Season 2, or at least let him reprise the role once again. In August, McGregor petitioned Disney for a third season of Andor, just so his character could appear within it.

“Somebody give me a job. Come on Disney,” he joked, as reported by PopVerse. “We need Season 2 for goodness sake. What are we waiting for?”

Ranking the Star Wars Disney+ Live-Action TV Shows

Disney has given no indication it plans to release an Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2. Instead, it’s busy with a second season of Ahsoka, while The Mandalorian and Grogu is headed to theaters next year. Other movie plans include the Ryan Gosling and Matt Smith-starring Star Wars: Starfighter, and a number of projects that include the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey.
