Wonder Man Star Gives Explanation for Show’s Cancellation

Wonder Man Star Gives Explanation for Show’s Cancellation

Wonder Man star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has discussed the official explanation he was given for the show’s shock cancellation, while also calling for “some real, hard information” about the optics of the decision, in light of the series’ prior renewal.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Abdul-Mateen said he was given a specific reason for the show’s abrupt axe, and that it “had something to do with viewership numbers” that “didn’t make sense for business.” However, the actor added that he had not been given details of the numbers themselves — how many people had watched the series, or what its internal viewership targets had been.

Additionally, none of this explains why Disney and Marvel were happy enough with Wonder Man’s performance to renew the series back in March following the series’ finale, only to U-turn on that decision in July.

And then there’s the aforementioned optics of the cancellation, coming within days of increasingly frustrated comments by Mahershala Ali about the apparent scrapping of his long-awaited Blade movie. The ending of both projects in seemingly quick succession raised eyebrows, and Marvel fans highlighted the current situaton as a “terrible look” for the company’s support of projects starring Black actors. This response was then noted by Wonder Man co-creator Andrew Guest, who stated that there was “important conversations being had online about the kind of stories we’re prioritizing and the kind of shows that platforms want to make.”

Numerous comments highlighted the varying issues impacting the quality or release of other projects featuring Black characters in recent years. Announced in 2020, the Don Cheadle-starring Armor Wars has been left missing in action. After finishing filming in 2022, Ironheart’s launch was held back until 2025, impacting the series’ momentum. Samuel L. Jackson’s Secret Invasion series saw Nick Fury get a solo project after 15 years, only for it to turn out as one of the lowest-rated Marvel projects ever, with no plans announced for his return. After earning Captain America’s shield in 2019, Anthony Mackie’s six-year wait for a movie ended in the messy and disappointing Brave New World, while some fans have criticized the subsequent reintroduction of Steve Rogers. And after crossing over to the X-Men universe at the end of The Marvels, Monica Rambeau has, so far, been left out of the Avengers: Doomsday marketing.

“I think the optics are obvious,” Abdul-Mateen responded, when asked about Guest’s comments. “If I’m a big business, if I’m Disney, if I’m Marvel, I don’t want to be attached to these optics. So it should be a priority to change that narrative and to do what it takes to responsibly change that narrative with quality stories, with quality resources.

“I felt that our show did have quality story, did have quality resources, did have quality actors and people, and did produce quality results that the viewers responded to positively, that the voters responded to positively,” he continued. “So our show does deserve some study and some real, hard information about why a show like this did not continue forward, because it had all of the ingredients that one would want in a show.”

Looking to the future, it’s unclear to what extent Marvel still plans to make live-action Disney+ shows. Other than VisionQuest and Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, which have already been filmed, no other projects have been announced. The same is also true of Disney’s Star Wars wing, which also has no confirmed further series in the pipeline now it has finished filming Ahsoka Season 2.
