Amazon launches upgraded Alexa speech assistant in the UK

Amazon launches upgraded Alexa speech assistant in the UK

Amazon has launched Alexa+ in the UK, bringing its next‑generation, generative AI assistant to what it says is its most engaged market.

Rolling out from 19 March as part of an early access programme, Alexa+ will be free during the trial period. After that it will be included at no extra cost for Prime members or charged at £19.99 per month for non‑Prime customers.

New buyers of eligible Echo and Echo Show devices will get immediate access, while existing users with compatible hardware can register for an invite.

Alexa+ is currently available in the US, Canada and Mexico, with the UK representing its first launch outside of North America.

Powered by large language models, Alexa+ is designed to move beyond simple commands to more natural, conversational exchanges in British English. Amazon says the assistant can follow context across conversations, let users switch topics without repeating prompts and allow them to pick up the same interaction across Echo devices, Fire TV and the Alexa app.

The UK launch is heavily localised. Developed by teams in Cambridge, Alexa+ has been tuned to understand regional accents and British expressions such as “cuppa”, “knackered” and “it’s nippy”, and to handle local conventions around dates and terminology. Amazon claims Alexa is already the most popular voice assistant in the UK, with more than 114 billion interactions over the past three years.

A key pitch for Alexa+ is its “agentic” capability to complete multi‑step tasks from start to finish. In the UK, the assistant can book appointments, manage calendars, order goods, control smart home devices and run routines that, for example, switch off lights, turn down the thermostat and arm alarms in one request. It integrates with services such as Spotify, Treatwell and a growing list of partners including OpenTable and Just Eat.

The upgrade arrives amid softer smart speaker sales and wider concerns about the reliability of generative AI. According to The Guardian, early US users have reported inconsistent answers and fabricated details, while UK demos have highlighted mispronounced footballer names and non‑British phrasing in match summaries.

On privacy, Amazon says Alexa+ retains existing safeguards, with camera controls and visual indicators showing when the assistant is listening. A centralised Alexa Privacy dashboard allows users to review what Alexa heard, manage attachments, adjust how long recordings are stored and change other settings.
