Point Break TV Show Gets the Green Light at AMC

AMC has given its Point Break TV show the green light.

A sequel series based on Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze’s iconic action movie has officially received a series order from AMC and AMC+, according to Variety. AMC Studios and StudioCanal will co-produce the project, with production on an eight-episode Season 1 set to begin early 2027.

“More than three decades after the events of the original Point Break film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them,” an official logline shared by the site said.

Butterfly producer Dave Kalstein and Sugar producer Christopher C. Rogers will lead the new Point Break show as co-showrunners and executive producers. Alcon’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are executive producers, with Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen also in the mix.

Being set 30 years after the events of the original film, it’s unclear if Reeves will play any part in the series. Additional plot information, including who will star in the project, has also not been revealed.

Point Break is a quintessential ’90s movie. Originally released back in July 1991, the Kathryn Bigelow-directed film starred Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah and Swayze as a bank robber/surfer named Bodhi.

It’s a Southern California-set story that has emerged as a cult classic in the decades since its release. Word of a TV adaptation first arrived late last year, with today’s news confirming that the show will happen, but the AMC show won’t be the first crack at someone else trying to ride its wave.

Alcon released a Point Break remake starring Luke Bracey as Utah and Edgar Ramirez as Bodhi in 2015. It failed to have the sea legs of the film it pulled from, earning lackluster reviews from critics, including a 5/10 from IGN. Our review of the first crack at the IP returned much more favorable results.

“It’s fun, and it covers a lot of ground,” we said in our 8/10 review. “You really get your money’s worth.”
