A Playable Build of an Unreleased Scream Game Has Surfaced Thanks to Steam Leak

An unreleased Scream game has found its way online thanks to the recent Steam leak.

Last week, Steam was hit with a massive leak that saw tons of files and builds from the years 2003 – 2013 dumped online. It’s been an interesting treasure trove for those who like gaming history, but one of the most unexpected things to come out of the incident is a playable build for a licensed Scream game that was never announced or released.

Kotaku spotted Twitter user roly poly reaper talking about the game and sharing never before seen gameplay.

update: we got multiplayer to work using goldberg emu + radmin VPN. heres footage of it running in the final build of the game pic.twitter.com/CpWOF9Y7RP

Interestingly enough, the game appears to be very similar to the likes of Dead by Daylight. One player would fill the shoes of Ghostface and track down ordinary players who are trying to collect evidence against the killer. The game was in the works from a developer known as Fatshark and would’ve predated Dead by Daylight and the Friday the 13th games, meaning it was a bit ahead of its time.

It’s unclear exactly when this was developed, but it wouldn’t be surprising if this took place around the time of Scream 4 in 2011. The franchise had been on ice for a decade prior to that film, so it would make sense if the rights owners were trying to generate some brand synergy. While we’ll never get to play the finished version of this Scream game, some of the fans digging through the files were able to get multiplayer working.

It’s an interesting relic from the past and one that would probably make more sense these days, should Paramount Games be interested in taking another crack at things. Dead by Daylight is still a huge title, and later this week, Halloween: The Game will release for early access owners. Whether that one sticks the landing remains to be seen, but previews have been pretty positive so far.
