Apple Expands Smart Home Strategy With New HomeView Hub

Apple Expands Smart Home Strategy With New HomeView Hub

Apple expanded its smart home strategy Tuesday with the introduction of a new multimedia hub it’s calling HomeView.

The elegantly designed aluminum device features a seven-inch Liquid Retina display connected to a domed speaker base by a stainless-steel hinge that adjusts the viewing angle. A wall-mounted version is also available.

The tabletop model (pictured above) comes in silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray. The wall-mounted version comes in space gray and silver. Both cost US$299, with pre-orders open now and availability beginning Nov. 13. Wall mounts are sold separately, starting at $59.95.

“Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.

“It recognizes your face to shift from a household screen to your own experience, fills the room with incredible sound, keeps you connected to the people who matter most with FaceTime, and makes it easy to control your smart home,” he added.

HomeView runs Apple Intelligence with Siri AI, which launches in beta. Personal-context features require a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with Siri AI turned on, according to Apple.

“They have done an exceptional job with personalization,” said Ross Rubin, the principal analyst with Reticle Research, a consumer technology advisory firm in New York City.

“It recognizes up to six family members, showing information that is pertinent to them while not sending any information to Apple,” he told TechNewsWorld.

“Even Siri requests sent to the cloud use an identifier and not an Apple ID, so requests are not personally identifiable,” he added.

Signature Clean Design

“Apple’s signature clean design and strong underlying technology make HomeView a very capable smart display,” noted Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst with the Enderle Group, an advisory services firm in Bend, Ore.

“However, I dislike that it forces you into the rigid Apple ecosystem, which makes it a non-starter for me and others like me, even though it will be perfectly fine for dedicated Apple fans,” he told TechNewsWorld.

“I also have to point out that the design seems to heavily rip off existing Amazon Echo Show products,” he added.

“Against competitors like the Google Nest Hub Max,” he said, “the HomeView holds its own purely on the merits of its sleek hardware design and highly responsive screen technology.”

HomeView is available in four colors: silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray.

Nevertheless, Enderle pointed out that Google maintains a distinct advantage in conversational AI capabilities, proactive daily assistance, and broader third-party smart home device compatibility out of the box. “That leaves the HomeView playing catch-up in terms of sheer utility,” he said.

Competing for Smart Home Control

Brett Faulk, senior vice president and a principal analyst at SmartTech Research, a technology advisory firm in Las Vegas, noted that HomeView combines a useful seven-inch screen with personalized household experiences and privacy protections designed to keep each person’s messages and calendar private.

“My main reservation is that Siri AI launches in beta, so its ability to reliably handle everyday requests still needs to prove itself in real homes,” he told TechNewsWorld.

“HomeView’s strongest competitive pitch is a shared display that connects closely to each person’s Apple devices and personal information, backed by Apple’s privacy protections,” he added. “Amazon and Google already offer AI-assisted home experiences, so Apple needs to demonstrate that its integration makes everyday tasks easier enough to justify choosing another ecosystem.”

Apple’s announcements represent a significant expansion of its smart home strategy, moving beyond individual devices toward a more integrated experience spanning entertainment, communications, security, and home automation, maintained Jennifer Kent, senior vice president and a principal analyst at Parks Associates, in Dallas, a market research and consulting company specializing in consumer technology products.

“Apple has a considerable advantage in its existing customer relationships and device ecosystem,” she told TechNewsWorld. “However, it is not currently a leading smart home control platform. Parks Associates research finds that Amazon leads as the primary smart home control platform among smart home device owners at 34%, followed by Google at 13% and Apple at 10%.”

Nevertheless, she pointed out the market is far from settled, with Parks research showing that 80% of smart home device owners would consider switching their primary control platform, and that 46% of those willing to switch cited the ability to control all their devices in one place as a motivation.

Kent contended that HomeView is a strategically important introduction. “Amazon and Google have long offered smart displays, but Apple is bringing together personalized household information, entertainment, communications and smart home control in one interface,” she explained.

Available in space gray and silver, the wall-mounted HomeView can be attached using three purpose-built mounts from Schneider Home.

“Facial recognition and personalized experiences could distinguish HomeView from competing smart displays, particularly for households already invested in Apple products,” she said.

She added that a dedicated interface could make smart home control more accessible and intuitive for all household members, reducing reliance on smartphones and multiple apps.

But, as is often the case with Apple products, pricing could be a hangup. “At $299, HomeView enters a market with established, lower-cost alternatives,” Kent noted. “Apple must demonstrate value beyond what consumers already get from their smartphones, smart speakers, and televisions.”

New Apple TV 4K

Along with HomeView, Apple introduced a new Apple TV 4K ($299), available Nov. 13, and HomePod mini 2 ($149), available Oct. 30. Pre-orders for both are open now. Apple TV 4K includes Siri AI in beta at launch, while HomePod mini 2 will receive it through a future software update.

Apple TV 4K

The new Apple TV 4K adds Siri AI, faster performance, and expanded surround sound support.

“Apple TV 4K strengthens Apple’s premium streaming position while expanding the television’s role in home control, security and AI-powered interactions,” Kent observed.

“That said,” she continued, “Apple TV always comes with a premium price point, and Amazon, Google and Roku offer lower-cost alternatives with substantial installed bases.”

Reticle’s Rubin argued that built-in smart TV features are reducing demand for separate streaming devices like Apple TV. He pointed out that for $299, a consumer can buy a 55-inch Samsung television from Best Buy. “As the TV add-on market shrinks, because virtually every new TV sold today is a smart TV, Apple TV is going to appeal mostly to folks who want to stay within the Apple ecosystem,” he said.

Success Tied to Siri’s Reliability

The new HomePod mini 2 offers impressive computational audio technology packed into a very clean, aesthetically pleasing, and compact design that fits well in any room, Enderle noted.

“On the downside,” he added, “the touch controls can feel a bit limited compared to physical dials, and the Siri AI integration, while improved, still struggles with complex, multi-layered queries that other digital assistants handle with ease.”

Apple HomePod mini 2 color lineup

HomePod mini 2 comes in five colors and offers enhanced audio. Siri AI support will arrive in a future update.

SmartTech’s Faulk asserted that the HomePod mini 2’s strongest appeal will be among Apple households that want music, home control, and audio across their Mac and television to work together. “Against Alexa+ and Gemini-powered alternatives, the deciding factor will be how reliably Siri AI handles everyday requests, and Apple’s future update timing leaves that comparison unfinished,” he said.

The hardware introduced Tuesday gives Apple more opportunities to earn a place in everyday household routines, but Siri’s reliability will determine whether people keep using it, he added. “I would also watch the total cost of ownership,” he warned. “Apple’s disclosures include daily limits on some server-based AI features and future fees for expanded access.”

“Ultimately, Apple’s greatest opportunity is to make the smart home work better as a system, not simply to introduce more connected products,” Parks’ Kent said. “Its success will depend less on sales of individual devices and more on whether it can deliver a differentiated experience that attracts new households, expands adoption and builds greater loyalty to its platform.”
