Booster Gold TV Show Not Moving Forward at DC Writer Says

It’s a sad day for superhero fans, as just hours after actor Mahershala Ali announced he’s no longer working on Marvel’s Blade, writer David Jenkins confirmed his Booster Gold TV show also “won’t be moving forward.”

The Our Flag Means Death creator offered an unceremonious conclusion for his long-in-development series adaptation with a post on Threads. It’s an announcement that followed months of speculation that the project’s demise was near, with Jenkins pointing to Ali’s cancelation confirmation as a good example for his feelings.

For now, it’s unclear if the project as a whole is dead, or if only Jenkins’ version of the show has come to an end. At the very least, it seems like quite the setback for the DCU.

“My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward,” he said. “Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”

Although it’s unclear if it could materialize in the future, it seems to be curtains for yet another big superhero project. Jenkins doesn’t think he could have shared the news any better than Ali, who confirmed his Blade movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe had taken a stake through the heart.

“For whatever reason, that project is not for me,” the segment from Ali’s interview with GQ before it was shared by Jenkins said. “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.

“Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn previously announced his plan to bring a live-action story based on the witty time traveler during an all-encompassing DCU reveal video back in 2023. It was a moment that had fans hopeful for the future of the company’s movie ambitions, but in the years since, we’ve heard crushingly little about the project.

“Booster Gold is one of comics’ really popular cult heroes,” Gunn promised at the time. “He is a fascinating guy. He’s a loser from the future who uses future technology to come back to the present day and become a superhero, so that people will love him. It is basically the superhero story of imposter syndrome on an HBO Max series.”

Gunn then said Booster Gold was “going pretty strong” in February 2025 before Jenkins signed on to handle the pilot the following July. At the time, it was reported that, should the show get the full series treatment, Jenkins would be its showrunner.

Gunn eventually gave an update on Booster Gold in April of this year, saying simply the series was still “in development.” He confirmed another DC show, Paradise Lost, was also “in extreme development,” while also revealing that The Authority project had been paused and could show up “maybe some day” but “not soon.”
