Marvel has revealed a very, very short clip featuring Sadie Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and fans are doing their best to piece together what her mystery character is saying in it.
In what is only the latest stunt as the comic book company continues teasing fans about Sink’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a new official clip has emerged online, revealing a first look at her character in the actual movie. So, is she X-Men telepath Jean Grey or Mary Jane Watson, or is she maybe someone else entirely? Well, we still don’t really know.
Because Marvel just can’t help itself despite the swarm of rumors online, the clip of Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is only about five seconds long. It also features very little of her character moving or saying really anything at all. The only thing she manages to say before censor bars and a few loud bleeps butt in is “What would you do if…”
Is this disappointingly little as we enter premiere week? Absolutely, but it looks like Marvel at least left a few crumbs for fans to pick apart in the meantime.
While Sink’s character doesn’t exactly seem to be donning an X-Men uniform in the clip, her dark hair color and green eyes already have fans trying to narrow down her role. Jean Grey is, of course, the prevailing theory, with at least one person taking the theory to Sink herself in recent weeks. It’s for this reason that some fans believe the rest of that bleeped-out sentence might tie into how she might be able to use psychic powers to restore the world’s memory of Peter Parker.
“What would you do if I could help your friends remember who you are?” one Spider-Man: Brand New Day fan on Reddit guessed.
“‘What would you do if everybody who ever said they loved you rejected you because you have powers,'” an X/Twitter user suggested.
“I bet she’s asking Peter about restoring Ned and Mj’s memories,” another theorized.
OK, so, what else does this clip tell us? Sink says her Spider-Man character “sits on a bench” at some point in the movie, we know she’ll talk, and…that’s about it. Last time we checked, these are both things Jean Grey is capable of, but there’s another hint in the footage that might connect to another one of the X-Men hero’s abilities: telepathy.
As others have pointed out, the video is spliced together pretty awkwardly. Even with those censor bars, it almost looks like Sink’s character isn’t moving her mouth at all. Naturally, some believe that’s because she’s using telepathy to communicate with whichever other mystery character she’s talking to.
“Her mouth doesn’t move because she’s using telepathy,” one fan said. “The gag is the mouth never had to be covered in the first place.”
At this point, we won’t have to do much more waiting to find out what’s really going on with Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The latest MCU flick will finally swing into theaters this Friday, July 31, meaning we’re just days away from finally solving the mystery. For now, Marvel hasn’t confirmed who exactly she’s playing or if Jean Grey is actually in the movie, but it has certainly done its best to throw everyone off the trail.
Peter Parker himself, star Tom Holland, even went as far as to outright deny that the X-Men character would show up, leaving fans to either accept his statement as fact or keep falling further down the rabbit hole. Meanwhile, director Destin Daniel Cretton has insisted that there is a “very real reason” why her identity has been kept a secret.
