Double Fine Productions, who recently regained the rights to its entire catalog following its pivot back to independence after Microsoft parted ways with several studios during its “Xbox reset,” is honoring Tim Curry by making Brutal Legend free to download and own on PC for 666 minutes – until 3:06am PT/6:06am ET on Thursday, August 27.
Curry, who passed away today at the age of 80, voiced Doviculus in Double Fine founder Tim Schafer’s 2009 heavy metal strategy game Brutal Legend. “Rest in peace, dark prince,” the company wrote on its itch.io page where you can download the game on PC. IGN’s own Daemon Hatfield loved Brutal Legend, giving it a 9 out of 10 in his review. “Brutal Legend is a tour de force that wraps up humor, music, and clever gameplay into one highly polished package,” Daemon wrote. “You haven’t played a game quite like this before and won’t want to miss it.”
Curry was perhaps best known for his role in the cult classic film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but also appeared in many video games besides Brutal Legend, including Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (back in the FMV cutscene days!), Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, and Dragon Age: Origins.
Double Fine, meanwhile, has announced that it is using its newfound independence to bring back its Amnesia Fortnight game jam as it looks to create its next project(s).
