A prominent Call of Duty e-sports commentator has opted to resign from his role after pursuing a romantic relationship with his co-commentator’s ex-wife.

In what is one of the most unique stories of the week, Call of Duty League commentator Clint “Maven” Evans has announced that he’s stepping away from the CDL for the “foreseeable future.” He noted that this decision came after he chose to pursue a romantic relationship with the wife of his co-commentator, Joseph “MerK” DeLuca. Evans noted that he recognized that the situation is “taboo” and “unconventional” in a statement.

“As some of you know, I was very close to my casting partner Joe and his family,” Evans wrote. “Maurisa was one of my best friends. We remained friends, after they divorced, and along the way it became more than that and we started dating. I understand how unconventional/taboo it is. It’s truly not something I ever foresaw happening.”

He went on to note that he hopes to return to the CDL in the future, but has acknowledged that it may not happen.

“I hope that one day I’ll be back working on the CDL,” he continued. “If not, it was a hell of a ride, and I appreciate the love over the years. Please continue to show support to Joe, the CDL, and its talent!”

Naturally, the Call of Duty e-sports community has had some very intense reactions to the news. Many feel that Evans betrayed his friend, whom he has known for well over a decade. DeLuca hasn’t commented on the situation and hasn’t posted on his X page since October 4. The start date for the upcoming CDL season has yet to be formally announced, but historically, it begins in December, shortly after the latest Call of Duty is released.
