The official GKIDS announcement describes the list as a combination of “new and classic titles” that “highlight GKIDS’ ongoing commitment to preserving and celebrating feature films… through high-quality physical media.”
Mamoru Oshii’s Angel’s Egg is an influential work of animation from the ‘80s, while the vibrant and experimental Love & Pop was Hideaki Anno’s first commercial live-action movie in the late ’90s. Linda Linda Linda was first remastered in 4K UHD for its 20th anniversary last year.
This collector’s edition is the first time Look Back, which came out in 2024, will be available on Blu-ray in the West. The Tatsuki Fujimoto adaptation was released on Blu-ray in Japan earlier this year, and some Reddit users have already noticed that this new GKIDS edition will feature the same art and packaging design.
GKIDS, which debuted its first exclusive home video release in 2022, has also been making moves beyond the physical media space. The distributor signed a deal with HBO Max last Fall which gave the Warner Bros.-owned service the streaming rights to 20 “adult-oriented” films, including Love & Pop and Angel’s Egg.
