Government launches AI Growth Lab to help legal tech firms navigate regulation

Government launches AI Growth Lab to help legal tech firms navigate regulation

The UK government has launched a new AI Growth Lab to help organisations developing AI for the legal sector bring products to market more quickly by providing coordinated access to regulators.

The advisory sandbox, which is being led by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, is designed to help organisations better understand how existing regulatory frameworks apply to AI technologies. Legal services will be the first sector supported by the programme.

The government said organisations developing AI for legal services often need to navigate multiple regulatory and professional frameworks, creating uncertainty that can slow innovation and adoption.

The AI Growth Lab aims to address this by bringing together regulators to provide coordinated guidance, helping organisations understand how existing rules apply to emerging technologies while maintaining current legal and regulatory requirements.

According to the government, the initiative is intended to accelerate the safe and responsible adoption of AI in legal services while improving access to justice through faster, higher-quality, and more affordable legal services.

The programme is open to organisations developing or deploying AI in legal services, including LawTech companies, law firms, conveyancing firms, AI developers, public sector organisations, SMEs, and other businesses exploring AI-enabled legal services.

The government said it is particularly interested in applications involving novel regulatory questions or technologies that span multiple regulatory regimes.

Insights from the programme will be shared in an aggregated and anonymised form where appropriate to improve regulatory understanding and inform future expansion of the wider AI Growth Lab initiative.

Applications for the Legal Services AI Growth Lab opened on 3 August and will remain open until 27 September, with successful applicants expected to begin working with regulators later this year.
