JPMorgan-founded industry group ‘expanding to address AI risk’

Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase (JPMC) has called on corporate leaders across the US to join an industry group focused on mitigating the risks of AI, according to Reuters.

The newswire cited two sources who said that Dimon has personally contacted CEOs of large US banks and IT firms to ask if they will join the group, an expansion of the existing Alliance for Critical Infrastructure (ACI), of which JPMC is a founder member.

People familiar with the matter also told Reuters that Dimon and other ACI leaders aim for the expanded group to foster cross-sector collaboration on AI risks and the guardrails it needs, then feed this back to the Trump administration to guide policy.

They added that the group is intended to be finalised by the end of 2026, with an initial meeting with prospective new members to be held this month.

The ACI was originally formed as a public-private coalition to identify systemic risks to critical national infrastructure, share insights, and improve resilience and crisis planning. It brought together organisations across financial services, utilities, and telecoms.

In addition to JPMC, founding members included American International Group, AT&T, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Consolidated Edison Inc., Lumen Technologies, Mastercard, Southern Company, and Xcel Energy.

Dimon, who is reportedly planning his successor, has been outspoken on the potential risk of AI and warned in May that the technology will eventually cut jobs in the financial sector.

In July, he publicly backed moves by the US government to restrict access to Anthropic’s frontier AI cybersecurity model Claude Mythos. Speaking at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit, a gathering of defence and tech leaders, Dimon likened the risks associated with use of Mythos to “giving ballistic missiles to individuals”.

Regulators and key financial services organisations have registered similar concerns about the potential impacts of AI on the sector.

In June, the chief executive of the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) Sam Woods told the Financial Times that UK banks remain worryingly exposed to attacks by advanced AI models and the Financial Stability Board (FSB) called for tighter controls on financial services AI deployment citing the potential risks.

The European Central Bank has ordered euro zone banks to prepare AI defence plans, while cyber agencies in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance have warned that advanced AI cyber attacks are months away.
