An updated version of the La La Land movie poster has finally fixed an issue that’s haunted Ryan Gosling for nearly a decade.
La La Land is turning ten years old, and to celebrate, Lionsgate has created a new version of the film’s iconic movie poster that shows Gosling and co-star Emma Stone dancing while the lights of Los Angeles watch in the background.
This update comes as a welcome reprieve for Gosling, who has long complained of an issue in the original poster: his left hand. Or, as he calls it, “La La Hand.”
As told by the star himself in a 2024 interview with WSJ, he wasn’t aware the photo would become the flick’s official poster. “We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it would be cool to put my hand [more flat], even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool,” he explained. “I was sure it was cooler. Now when I look at it, and I have to see it all the time, you know, what would’ve been cooler… [the intended pose]. It just killed the energy that way.”
La La Land is coming back to theaters starting Sunday, August 16 in honor of its 10th anniversary. Movie-goers can see it in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theaters and relive the musical romantic comedy-drama that won six Oscars and seven Golden Globes, following aspiring actress Mia and jazz musician Seb as they try to carve out their lives in Los Angeles. IGN gave the film a 9.5 out of 10, with Terri Schwartz calling it a “joyous filmgoing experience” and a “musical brimming with optimism that never becomes treacly.”
This isn’t the only big news for La La Land; it’s also getting a Broadway adaptation, which will feature music from Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, all three of whom worked on the soundtrack for the film.
Marc Platt, producer for La la Land, said he was “thrilled” to bring the flick to Broadway, calling it the “next exciting chapter in its evolution.”
“We’ve assembled a world-class team to create a musical that will delight ‘La La Land’s’ millions of current fans and introduce the property to a whole new audience.”
