Marvel Comics continues to tease a major shake-up for the Avengers franchise thanks to Avengers: Armageddon, a series that is said to be as important to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as 2004’s Avengers: Disassembled. This new series will leave the Avengers broken and reeling, but the world will still need heroes. And it seems the X-Men are being tapped to fill that void.
During their Avengers: Armageddon panel at SDCC 2026 today, Marvel revealed a new ongoing series called Maximum X-Men. Spinning out of the events of Armageddon, Maximum X-Men sees Storm spearhead a new team that includes Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice. Their goal is to defend the globe and fill the void left by the Avengers.
Maximum X-Men is written by Chris Yost (X-Force) and drawn by Tony Daniel (X-Men). Here’s the official description of the new series:
In the wake of the events of Avengers: Armageddon, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no more! So who will stand in defense of the Earth? The X-Men will! Storm gathers an elite team for just that task, including Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar and Justice! Mutants by birth, heroes by choice! And their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone! Is this Annihilus again—or something far, far worse?
Maximum X-Men #1 will be released in December 2026.
Also during the panel, Marvel revealed new cover art and details for several Avengers-centric titles releasing this fall. Most intriguingly, we saw a new teaser drawn by Avengers artist Chip Zdarsky that teases a big role for The Punisher in the second arc of that upcoming series. We also learned that Joshua Williamson’s Iron Man will start double-shipping in December as it kicks off parallel storylines called “Incarcerated Iron Man” and “War Machines.” You can see all the new art revealed in the slideshow gallery below:
