X-Men ’97 fever is burning hot right now, and Marvel fanned the flames at Comic-Con with the “Marvel Comics to Screen” panel. The panelists revealed new details about the upcoming third and fourth seasons, including the return of several fan-favorite mutant villains.

Fans can expect Mystique and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to return in Season 3. These characters have been conspicuously absent so far in the revival series, so it’s good to know that’s going to change soon.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Trailer Stills

What’s more, attendees got an early look at Season 3 in the form of a clip featuring these characters. We see Mystique and her team (which consists of the classic roster of Pyro, Avalanche, Blob, and Toad) in the streets and writing “mutant freedom” on the side of a building. Intriguingly, they’re joined by a new recruit in the form of the electricity-wielding teenage mutant Surge, who charges up their graffiti with a massive blast of power. The Brotherhood are then attacked by a new Sentinel variant decked out in patriotic blue colors.

That clip gives us some idea of the tone of the series in Season 3. While the X-Men will presumably win their final battle with Apocalypse this season, it seems tensions with the US government are still running high in the aftermath.

Executive producer Brad Winderbaum also gave attendees a quick update on the status of the next two seasons, revealing that as Season 2 airs right now, they’re wrapping up animation work on Season 3 and animatics on Season 4. Hopefully, that means we’ll see Season 3 at some point in 2027.
