Marvel TV Boss Praises She-Hulk, Says He’d ‘Love to Make More’

Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum has said he’d love to make more She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, despite the series’ mixed reviews and reportedly enormous budget.

Speaking via The Escape Pod podcast, Winderbaum said he considered She-Hulk to have performed well as it found a “general audience,” and he’d also “love” to make more — though he also seemed to suggest it was unlikely to actually happen.

“I know you’re She-Hulk fans, and I love She-Hulk too,” Winderbaum said. “I’d love to make more She-Hulk,” he continued, before one of his interviewers countered that this was not realistically going to happen considering the response from Marvel fans online. “I know,” Winderbaum appeared to concede.

“I’ll tell you this about She-Hulk,” Winderbaum went on, “that it’s one of our best-performing shows. It just hit the general audience. There was a mismatch between the general audience response and the fan response.”

On Rotten Tomatoes, She-Hulk sits with an 80% approval rating from critics but an eye-openingly low 32% rating from audiences. That’s a lower score than for any other Marvel series — including the similarly-panned Secret Invasion, ABC’s swiftly-cancelled Marvel’s Inhumans and even the Blade TV series which replaced Wesley Snipes with Kirk “Sticky Fingaz” Jones.

There’s also the issue of She-Hulk’s enormous cost, with a reportedly $225 million overall budget that ballooned due to featuring a largely CGI main character on screen for extended periods. For comparison, last year’s Marvel movie Thunderbolts/The New Avengers cost $180 million, while TV series Agatha: All Along cost just $40 million.

While Marvel Studios began its expansion onto Disney+ with an array of shows that boasted movie-level budgets (such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), it has more recently begun paring back its offering, rebranding its output under the distinct Marvel Television banner and aiming for cost-effective shows that it can afford to bring back for multiple seasons (such as Daredevil: Born Again and Wonder Man — reportedly the lowest budget Marvel series to date).

All of this has left the future of She-Hulk’s main character, played by Tatiana Maslany, in question. Perhaps she is better suited to the big screen, where the budget is still there to feature her in action. So far, however, there’s no sign so far she’ll make the leap for this year’s Avengers: Doomsday. An appearance in next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars seems most likely, though Marvel could also potentially use the end of its Multiverse Saga to sweep away certain characters it is no longer keen to continue using (something Emilia Clarke’s Secret Invasion character seems destined for).

“I’d love to have the oppurtunity to make more She-Hulk,” Winderbaum concluded. “Hopefully one day. Maybe.”
