Writer-director Michael Mann is taking another crack at his 2006 film, Miami Vice.
It was announced today that Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut will make its world premiere at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on October 3, 2026, followed by a Q&A with Mann.
It is described as “Michael Mann’s new cut” and that it will be shown in 4K. The Beyond Fest site doesn’t list the running time of this new cut.
If this version is truly a “new cut” then it will be an even different version of the film than the Miami Vice: Unrated Director’s Edition that was released on Blu-ray in 2008. The Unrated Director’s Edition is a re-edited film featuring scenes that were cut from the theatrical release as well as new music cues.
“These changes are enough to make this Miami Vice a slightly different and in some ways better experience than the theatrical cut, although the film’s same fundamental flaws remain,” as I wrote in my review of the Unrated Director’s Edition at the time.
“This edition, however, is closer in tone to the TV series [which Mann exec produced but did not create], enough to have muted some of that criticism. For example, it opens with an offshore speedboat race set against the sunny Miami skyline and scored with electronic music, which conjures memories of the series’ opening credits.”
Mann’s Miami Vice was a legendarily difficult production, culminating in the abrupt departure of lead actor Jamie Foxx, who played Detective Ricardo Tubbs opposite Colin Farrell as his partner, Sonny Crockett. Foxx abandoned the film during shooting in the Dominican Republic, a move that forced Mann to change the movie’s ending.
Although Miami Vice opened in first place at the domestic box office in 2006, it ultimately proved a commercial and critical misfire. However, the film has earned a cult status and critical reappraisal in the two decades since its release.
F1’s Joseph Kosinski will direct a big screen reboot, Miami Vice ‘85, that will star Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. That film will be released on May 19, 2028.
