We got more insight into Control Resonant today at IGN Live, as Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen showed off some of the game while explaining the approach to the sequel to 2019’s Control.

Unlike the first game, which was a third-person shooter, Control: Resonant is making the jump to an action role-playing game. In Control you played as Jesse Faden, and this time you’re playing as her brother, Dylan. Kasurinen said the switch in how you play really began “with the protagonist first. I aways knew I wanted to first do a game about Jesse and then the second is about Dylan. Control is always about these siblings.”

He said the idea was to really spotlight how “both siblings have their own personality and approach and ways of doing things. If Jesse uses a gun, then of course Dylan uses a melee weapon.” That weapon is called the Aberrant, which shape shifts throughout the game in order to face different kinds of threats, with Kasurinen explaining how Control’s powerful entities known as The Board “kind of manifest as this weapon.”

One stage showed off at IGN Live found Dylan fighting his way through what Kasurinen described as “an awesome mission. An early stage involving all of the different threats that are coming across Manhattan and how there is a device that goes through this liminal space of these patterned apartments. Dylan needs to get to the bottom of it and hook up the device.” He noted that in the game that “combat is quite hectic,” focused on “aggression, speed, moving through the environment at a fast pace.”

Kasurinen acknowledges that Control’s lore is rather dense. “We do throw them a bit into the deep end,” he said he about newcomers, but he stressed “there are guardrails and things that help you understand.” One of those things is a character named Zoe, who is also an outsider to all the things that happened in the first Control game, allowing her to get caught up alongside any players who need the same.

Control: Resonant will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 24, 2026.
