RoboCop TV Show Casts Dan Stevens as Its Star

Prime Video’s RoboCop TV show has reportedly cast Dan Stevens as its star.

The Downton Abbey star has officially boarded the untitled RoboCop reboot series, according to Deadline. Stevens will play a new version of the cop-turned-robot, Alex Murphy.

Amazon MGM reportedly had its eye on Stevens early in the casting process. While he might be best known as Matthew Crawley, he’s also appeared in projects like The Guest, the live-action Beauty and the Beast, the animated Among Us series, and more. The original Alex Murphy was played by Peter Weller, who returned to reprise the role across many RoboCop sequels and spinoffs.

Here’s the official logline for the show: “A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force — a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.”

Amazon greenlit its Prime Video RoboCop revival in July, though it’s said to have been in some form of development since the company acquired MGM back in 2022. Peter Ocko (Moonhaven, Lodge 49) is attached as showrunner, writer, and co-executive producer.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear, Rob Hackett, and The Conjuring’s James Wan are all involved as executive producers, too, with Danielle Bozzone overseeing for the company. Original RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are also executive producers.

“What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent,” Wan said in July. “With Peter’s distinctive vision and bold approach to storytelling, and alongside Ed and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re working to honor what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience.”

Outside of that aforementioned logline and the promise to deliver an eight-episode series, we know little about how RoboCop will revitalize an ’80s action icon for modern audiences. Although it’s without a firm release date or even any sort of window to look forward to, picking up Stevens just one month after the greenlighting process suggests the ball is rolling fast for now.
