Sabretooth, as Marvel fans know, is a jerk, but he’s an even bigger jerk when Wolverine’s around. The long-running rivalry between the two mutants is the stuff of comic book legend, but Insomanic brings it to life in its upcoming video game by forcing the two traditional adversaries to team up.
We’ve seen this co-op gameplay in action in previous gameplay videos, where Logan and Jean Grey get together for co-op finishers (and maybe a spot of romance). Insomniac said Wolverine and Sabretooth also have co-op gameplay, but it has a very different tone. And, crucially, Sabretooth will actually steal Wolverine’s kills.
“You may have not seen it because it kind of randomly happens, but sometimes Sabretooth steals your kill,” senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed told IGN in a recent interview. “So you’ll be in the middle of taking out an enemy and he like, wrecking ball grabs the enemy and takes him out. And the first couple of times you’re like, ‘What the hell, Sabretooth?’
“But then you’re like, ‘Wait, that’s the exact feeling we want the player to feel.’ Logan has this animosity with Sabretooth and it’s like, ‘Yeah, way to go guy. You just took my kill. Thanks.’ So yeah, I love some of those moments we have in there.”
“There’s a moment where Logan and Sabretooth are fighting together. Logan’s holding a Trask guard and Sabretooth is just ripping him apart,” Jess Reiner-Reed added.
So far, we’ve seen Wolverine team up with Jean Grey and Sabretooth, but Insomniac has confirmed to IGN that Wolverine will team up with other characters for co-op gameplay, too. “There’s more you haven’t seen, but I don’t want to spoil anything,” Reiner-Reed teased.
Who could those characters be? Mystique is a member of Team X, the pre-X-Men group Wolverine is a member of alongside Sabretooth, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Logan co-op with her in some way. We’ve also seen Leech, Callisto, Toad, and Caliban in the scene where Logan is trying to save them from Trask’s forces. Could they end up fighting alongside Wolverine as well? Lady Deathstrike, who is also in the trailers, could be another brief co-op partner too.
We’ve got plenty more on Marvel’s Wolverine from our big interview with Insomniac. And don’t forget to check out our hands-on preview ahead of the game’s September launch.
