Samsung ‘lays off’ US workers as part of move to Texas

Samsung has cut roles throughout its consumer electronics division in the US as part of a plan to move its headquarters to Texas, according to Reuters.

Samsung told the publication that 739 roles at the Samsung Electronics America (SEA) headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, were impacted. It added that it has presented the majority of those affected by the move with relocation offers but that others have been laid off, without giving a specific figure.

Approximately 1,000 people work at the SEA HQ, a 325,000 sq. ft campus that was formerly home to Unilever’s US operations.

Under the layoff plans 100 additional roles were cut at SEA’s office in Plano, Texas, a person close to the matter told Reuters. The source, who added that they were among those laid off in Texas, said that cuts affected the mobile division.

Samsung SDS America, the firm’s IT services arm, has also filed a notice indicating that it will lay off 179 roles at its site in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.

Samsung’s total US workforce was 11,770 at the end of 2025 including its chip division Samsung Semiconductor Inc. (SSI).

The South Korean tech giant announced plans to relocate its US headquarters from Englewood Cliffs to Plano on 1 June, just eight months after opening the New Jersey site.

At the time Michele Siekerka, president and chief executive of the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, blamed “decades of anti-business policies” for the move.

It joins other tech giants headquartered in Texas including Dell and Tesla and also puts SEA’s corporate operations closer to its $17 billion semiconductor fabrication site in Taylor, Texas.

In its latest earnings, Samsung said it expects an 1,800 per cent jump in profits in its upcoming financial results, driven by surging demand for AI chips.

The announcement came against the backdrop of rising unease among tens of thousands of Samsung Electronics workers in South Korea, who in April threatened to strike over pay. The unionised workers have called for the removal of a cap on bonuses and for 15 per cent of annual operating profit to go into performance pay.
