Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that we won’t be seeing Nick Fury in Avengers: Doomsday, but said that his character is set to return in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Jackson revealed this information in a red carpet interview with The Direct ahead of the premier for The Beast, his newest film. After The Direct’s interviewer noted that Nick Fury hasn’t been spotted in a Marvel movie for some time, Jackson said that he will be in the next film after Doomsday — which, according to the current slate laid out by Marvel Studios, is Avengers: Secret Wars.
He didn’t elaborate on what we can expect from Fury’s appearance in this movie, saying that Marvel only told him that he’d be in it and nothing more.
“Next movie… [The] movie after this one,” he told the outlet. “I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn’t told me anything, other than, ‘You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.'”
Thus far, Marvel has been keeping the cast of Secret Wars close to its chest; in September, Noah Jupe was added to the roster of actors set to star in the film in an as-yet unrevealed role. Anthony Mackie has also been confirmed for the movie, but says he won’t be able start filming until his run in a broadway showing of Macbeth ends in July 2027.
Secret Wars recently ran into some significant roadblocks, with multiple insiders claiming that filming for the project has been delayed until early 2027, most likely in January. Thus far, no reason for this delay has been revealed, but it’s enough to spark anxiety among fans — many of whom feel that Doomsday needs to be a home run of a movie to keep interest in the current MCU saga.
Secret Wars is set to cap off the Russo brothers’ involvement with the MCU, with the two saying in June 2026 that they won’t be directing a third film to create a new Avengers trilogy. The movie marks the sixth major cross-over event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will serve as the final chapter in the Multiverse saga, putting an end to the innumerable variations of characters that have been popping up in Marvel’s TV series and films over the MCU’s last three phases.
Recent reporting indicates that the Battleworld will be involved somehow, given that it serves as the setting for the Secret Wars comic storyline, though this hasn’t been confirmed. It would be a fitting way for the Multiverse Saga to end, though, as Battleworld is a patchwork planet made up of several different versions of Earth combined by none other than Dr Doom.
For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s in store, and if Avengers: Doomsday lives up to the hype. The movie releases in theaters on December 18, 2026.
