Amazon has dramatically axed its new Stargate revival series, only six months after its announcement.
Details remain scarce on the show’s focus, though Variety has reported that Amazon was sufficiently unhappy with its direction to have pulled the plug.
Executives within Amazon reportedly lacked confidence the series would have appealed to a broader audience beyond the existing Stargate fanbase.
The unnamed Stargate series was being developed for release on Prime Video by writer, executive producer and showrunner Martin Gero, who previously penned episodes of the original classic series Stargate SG-1 and its spinoff Stargate: Atlantis. Stargate veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were meanwhile onboard as consulting producers.
In a press release issued last November, Amazon described the now-canned show as a “new original series” rather than a direct continuation of anything that has come before, in order to tell “a bold new chapter” of the dormant sci-fi franchise. However, it would “not be a reboot”, Gero said.
“I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase,” Gero continued. “For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
Stargate originally kicked off with Roland Emmerich’s 1994 sci-fi film of the same name, which established a core group of characters expanded upon by hit television spin-off SG-1. Across 10 seasons and several TV movies, SG-1 then spawned its own sister show, Atlantis, and latterly a more separate, darker take on the franchise, Stargate Universe
While Amazon has walked away from this project, the company is reportedly still open to exploring other Stargate ventures in future — though none are currently in production.
