Supergirl debuts in North America on Digital on July 28, after a disappointing run in theaters that saw just $121 million made at the global box office.
On July 28, Supergirl will be available at home on participating digital platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango, and more. The DC Universe movie then launches on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 8.
Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El, followed last year’s DCU kickstarter Superman, but failed to generate anywhere near as much interest from cinemagoers. It was deemed a box office bomb when it debuted to a global total of $68 million following its June 26 premiere. The Warner Bros. superhero movie reportedly had a $170 million production budget and $120 million marketing budget, suggesting the studio would need around $300 million just to break even. Supergirl didn’t come close to that milestone.
“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations,” DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran told The New York Times following Supergirl’s opening weekend, “it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”
To that end, Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO Max in August, Clayface comes out in October, then Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow hits theaters in 2027.
Alcock will play a significant role in Man of Tomorrow and beyond, DC Studios has said. Supergirl takes place after the events of Superman and sees her encounter other galactic characters like Lobo, played by Jason Momoa. As for Man of Tomorrow, all we really know about the movie is that Superman and supervillain Lex Luthor have to work together to combat the threat of Brainiac. But we can also expect to see the main cast from Superman return. With Supergirl’s involvement, could we see the Justice League finally take shape?
