Supergirl officially has a streaming release date.
The latest movie from James Gunn’s DC reboot will be available to HBO Max subscribers starting next Thursday, September 10. An ASL Version of the film will be available at the same time, and it will debut on HBO linear the following day, September 11, at 8pm ET.
Starring Milly Alcock in the titular role, Supergirl is the second major movie in the new DC Universe helmed by James Gunn, following up on last year’s Superman. Unfortunately, it struggled to match its predecessor’s run at the box office.
Where Superman quickly soared to over $600 million globally, Supergirl struggled from its opening weekend. The film ended its run in theaters with a worldwide gross of just over $126 million on a budget Variety reported as somewhere between $170 and $185 million.
Unfortunately, the film hasn’t fared too well on the critical side, either. Supergirl currently sits at a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critic Clint Gage reviewed the movie for IGN, saying “Milly Alcock’s great take on Kara Zor-El gets lost in the spare parts from other movies used to assemble her story.”
The arrival on HBO Max follows the film’s release on digital earlier this month and will also follow a DVD release, which includes a limited edition 4K steelbook, on September 8.
DC Studios co-head Peter Safran has spoken on the film’s box office performance in an interview with The New York Times: “While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.” We also recently learned that the movie had competing cuts, reportedly in part due to creative differences between Gunn and director Craig Gillespie.
Supergirl’s poor box office performance put even more pressure on DC’s subsequent project, Lanterns. The live action series is currently releasing new episodes on HBO Max, and we’ve been pretty big fans of the first season. Viewership seems to be looking pretty good so far, too.
Going forward, Gunn himself is fully focused on the Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow. DC Studios will get another big movie in theaters before then, though: Clayface, a live-action body horror take on the Batman villain, is slated for release this October.
