Take-Two Boss Insists Rockstar Got GTA 6 Standard and Ultimate Edition Price Points Right

Take-Two Boss Insists Rockstar Got GTA 6 Standard and Ultimate Edition Price Points Right

The standard edition of GTA 6 costs $80, which represents a $10 increase on the established price of a triple-A console game. That hike raised more than a few eyebrows when Rockstar launched GTA 6 preorders in June. So, what’s the thinking behind it?

The Standard Edition of GTA 6 includes the base single-player experience, but the Ultimate Edition includes exclusive content, such as a mission and shops. The rights and wrongs of charging $20 extra for this content is already being heavily discussed by GTA 6 fans in a debate made all the more vociferous by Rockstar’s decision not to include a disc in the physical version.

In a new interview with IGN, Strauss Zelnick, boss of Rockstar parent company Take-Two, said the GTA 6 price was all about value.

“We aim always to deliver vastly more value than what we charge,” he said. “And we think that price point allows us to do just that. And then of course we have a premium opportunity for people who want to avail themselves of that. And even that one, again, we think is priced in a way so as to deliver much more value than what we’re charging.”

Zelnick added that just because GTA 6 is $80, other games from Take-Two publishing labels won’t necessarily follow suit. “It’s very much case by case,” he said, pointing to the $50 price point 2K went with for Mafia: The Old Country.

Earlier today, speaking in an investor-focused Q&A following Take-Two’s Q1 2027 financial results, Zelnick insisted video game pricing had not kept up with inflation.

“Look, I think that Rockstar got it right in terms of the pricing of this standard edition and the pricing of the deluxe edition,” he said. “And I think there’s no doubt that consumers are really excited about both. And I think depending on your own ability to pay and how avid a consumer you are, you can choose between them. But the preorders have been exceptional and we’re happy with the mix as well.

He added: “The truth is that the real cost of a AAA video game is a whole lot lower today than it was 20 years ago. Pricing has not kept pace with inflation. And our goal is to continue to over-deliver for our consumers, because how you feel about any experience is the intersection of the experience itself and what you pay for it. So to say that we expect that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be an incredible bargain as experiences go is a gross understatement, because Rockstar Games is known for over-delivering.”

“Our goal is not to maximize price,” Zelnick continued. “So in this case, I think what we’ve decided to do makes a whole lot of sense in the context of what we’re delivering. And that’s the lens through which we look going forward as well.”

In an IGN poll asking which edition of GTA 6 you’d buy, over 70% responded to say the $100 Ultimate Edition, which suggests Rockstar’s pricing strategy is working because it is convincing fans to spend that extra $20 for the exclusive content. This has led some to say that the Ultimate Edition is the default option for GTA 6, and the $80 version should be considered the cheaper option.

Also today, we have comments from Zelnick defending the decision not to release GTA 6 on a physical disc, as well as plans to release the next look at GTA 6 on Netflix.
