When it comes to board games, a frequent “Holy Grail” game (a term used to describe a game that someone has been hunting for, usually out of print and expensive) on many lists is Fantasy Flight Games’ Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game. But it looks like the search may be coming to an end for fans, as it was announced today that Ghost Galaxy has entered into an agreement with Universal and Fantasy Flight Games to publish a brand-new edition of this coveted title, coming to crowdfunding early next year.
First released back in 2008 and featuring imagery from the Sci-Fi Channel reboot, this social deduction/hidden traitor game wonderfully captured the tension from the show, where anyone could be a secret Cylon agent trying to thwart the single mission of the humans—to get home. Battlestar Galactica would go on to get three expansions, but almost a decade ago now, it all went out of print, and now prices on the secondary market for a full set (base game + expansions) could easily cost you more than a grand. Back in 2021, FFG did release a sort of reskinned version of BSG with Unfathomable, which replaced the Galactica with a boat and the Cylons with Lovecraftian horrors, which has seen success as well.
Details on this new edition are scant right now; all we have is that it’s a “new edition” that will feature “an updated design,” whatever that means, but I think the game is in safe hands. Overseeing this project will be Christian T. Peterson, the CEO of Ghost Galaxy and formerly the founder and CEO of Fantasy Flight Games and the creator of a little game called Twilight Imperium.
Recently, Fantasy Flight Games launched a similar campaign as the debut of its “Vault Series” with Arkham Horror Remastered (check out our interview and exclusive art reveal), which seeks to accomplish a similar goal with the much-loved Arkham Horror Second Edition. Whether this will be a part of the Vault Series or not, seeing as it is being officially published by another group, remains to be seen, but awesome to hear nonetheless.
The campaign page for the new edition of Battlestar Galactica will be launching soon, so you and your wallet can rejoice.
