The Beast for PS4 and Xbox One Canceled

Techland has canceled the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of Dying Light: The Beast, blaming the decision on “the technical realities of development.”

First-person zombie-slaying Dying Light: The Beast launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S last year. IGN’s review returned a 7/10. We said: “Dying Light: The Beast is a goofy, bloody sequel with a monstrous twist, but doesn’t do much else to mix things up.”

Techland had intended to release the game on the last generation of consoles, although that always felt like a stretch. So it has proven. In a statement published online, Techland said the compromises it would have had to make to get Dying Light: The Beast on PS4 and Xbox One were too great, and it would now offer refunds. It’s worth noting that both the PS4 and Xbox One are now 13 years old.

Here’s the statement in full:

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Dying Light: The Beast was built from the ground up to take full advantage of current-generation hardware. Its open world, advanced visuals, and fluid combat and traversal all depend on processing power and memory that previous-generation consoles simply cannot provide. As development progressed, it became clear that bringing the game to those platforms would require compromises that would prevent us from delivering the experience we set out to create.

This was not a matter of choosing to leave those platforms behind. Rather, it reflected the technical realities of development and our commitment to delivering the best possible experience.

We know many of you were looking forward to playing on PS4 or Xbox One, and we are truly sorry for the disappointment this causes. Anyone who was expecting to play on either platform will be eligible for a refund.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

In March this year, Techland announced a new edition of the game, called Dying Light: The Beast Restored Land. This includes the full game, all post-release content, and new Restored Land content. What’s next for the franchise? Techland is yet to say. But we do know the Polish studio is working on a fantasy game.
