Director Christoper Nolan’s The Odyssey has managed to track down another $215.3 million at the global box office, dropping only 19% in its second weekend in theaters.
It’s yet another surprisingly strong weekend for the Matt Damon-led epic that saw it wrangle $128.3 million internationally and $87 million domestically. Its total box office haul now stands at $639.6 million, representing only the slightest hit to the already staggering momentum it set sail with upon its July 17, 2026, premiere.
IGN reported that its opening weekend managed to surpass expectations with an impressive $264.1 million debut. Audiences have continued to fill theaters – including the few locations supporting 70mm Imax – through the following week. The split of the total puts The Odyssey at $353.26 internationally and $286.37 domestically, and as the numbers continue to pile, it shouldn’t be long before Universal and Nolan reach that illustrious $1 billion milestone.
Speaking of movies hitting $1 billion, although Toy Story 5 was knocked to third in the global box office behind Chinese picture All Wishes Come True, the Pixar film finally managed to reach that billion marker itself. Its worldwide total now positions it with $1.022 billion after spending six weekends in theaters since its June 19 debut.
Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer came in fourth at the box office with a worldwide pull for the weekend of $32.1 million, while Minions & Monsters stuck around in the top five with $28.2 million. Disney’s live-action Moana, meanwhile, has failed to catch any wind, coming in sixth at the global box office as its total coasts at an underwhelming $228.16 million. The adaptation is now drifting through its third weekend in theaters after its July 10 premiere saw it barely surpass Disney’s recent Snow White movie.
The Odyssey has proven to be the latest critical and commercial success story of 2026. Low-budget horror movies Backrooms and Obsession attracted audiences in the spring, with Toy Story 5 helping to carry the torch as summer began. As the Nolan film is set to continue its run in theaters for a while yet, it seems prepped to finish strong.
While The Odyssey has proven to be quite the contender against the vocal naysayers leading up to its release, it will have some fierce competition next weekend when Marvel unleashes its Spider-Man: Brand New Day. As fans line up to see the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and finally uncover the identity of Sadie Sink’s mystery character, it’s sure to do big numbers when it premieres, too.
Variety reported that The Odyssey had a production budget of about $250 million, with marketing costs estimated to be around $125 million.
