The Odyssey’s 70MM IMAX release is being extended by a month.

If you were bummed about not being able to score a ticket for The Odyssey in 70MM IMAX, you will have a second chance. The film was set to run in the format through mid-August, but IMAX has since added showtimes at participating theaters all the way through September 16th. Ideally, this should give everyone an opportunity to check it out, so long as scalpers don’t snatch them up first.

70MM IMAX is different than any other format the film is showing in. You’ll have no troubles getting a ticket for a standard showing, and you’ll probably be able to find a regular IMAX screening with relative ease so long as you have one close by. Only 25 theaters are capable of playing 70MM IMAX films in the United States, however. As a result, there are only a few showings every day in these cinemas, and tickets are hard to come by.

This format is considered the “intended” way to see the film, as it is the first movie ever shot 100% for the format. IMAX film cameras are incredibly noisy, so it was previously impossible to shoot dialogue scenes with them, so they were reserved for set pieces. The IMAX engineers managed to find a way to suppress the noise with a shell around the IMAX camera so that Christopher Nolan could shoot the entire film on the format.

70MM IMAX boasts a larger image that’s meant to fill your peripheral vision, an unmatched resolution, great sound, and have the tactile texture of a film as opposed to digital projection. With The Odyssey being so successful, it’s been basically impossible to get tickets to 70MM IMAX screenings. Tickets have been sold out at theaters for weeks, but this extension should give fans another chance to see it on the format.

The film’s success has also caused other ships to rise with its tide. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has seen a spike in players since the film’s release. Although the game is not an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, it was heavily inspired by it and lifts elements from that story.
