Galadriel’s husband Celeborn will finally be introduced in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, with new episodes set to debut Stranger Things’ Jamie Campbell Bower as her “lover-boy” partner.
Exactly how Celeborn will be introduced — and where he’s supposed to have been for the past two seasons — remains under wraps. But Empire has confirmed that Celeborn will feature in the show’s upcoming third season, and that the actor behind Stranger Things’ Vecna will play Galadriel’s fair-headed fellow.
As Tolkien fans will know, Galadriel and Celeborn were married during Middle-earth’s First Age, long prior to the events of the Second Age, which The Rings of Power is adapting. In the show’s first season, Galadriel mentions that her husband never returned from fighting Morgoth — with the implication being that she has not seen him since.
Until now, our only glimpses of Celeborn on screen come from a couple of cameo appearances in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But not to worry if you can’t really remember him — he has very little to do, with Galadriel herself very much the star.
“This idea of longing and yearning is so pervasive in Tolkien’s relationship with [his wife] Edith for the time that they were apart,” Bower said of Celeborn and Galadriel’s relationship, which is inspired by the author’s long absences from his own wife during youth and while fighting in the First World War. “I really feasted on that idea. Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing for something that he so dearly loved and so dearly missed as well.”
Bower described his character’s demeanour as a “lover-boy,” while Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark noted that her elf alter ego was “kind of rude to him in the books.”
“She’s the queen!” Clark concluded. “But Jamie looks exactly like how I would imagine Celeborn. He’s such an elf.”
Rings of Power is set to debut its third season via Prime Video at some point before the end of 2026 — a two-year wait for fans since the show’s last episode. But while it may have been a couple of years for fans, it will have been even longer for Rings of Power’s characters — who’ll after something of a time jump. While Season 2 ended with Galadriel and her elvish friends finally united and ready to fight the growing threat of Sauron, the series’ third run will fast forward to the middle of the subsequent conflict.
“Jumping forward several years from the events of Season 2, Season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron,” an official synopsis reads, “as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”
Earlier this year, it was reported that Rings of Power was still on-track to run for five seasons, with the $1 billion Prime Video show claimed to be still under the protection of Amazon boss Jeff Bezos’ “magical halo” despite its huge costs.
